The sound of tomatoes sizzling in the pan and the smell of savory goodness filling the air always signaled a special family meal. It truly brought everyone together for good times.

A Southern food classic

My love affair with Southern food began in that very kitchen. Summers meant endless days spent helping Grandma shell peas on the porch or churn homemade ice cream.

But it was always the anticipation of dishes like fried green tomatoes, passed down through generations, that truly captured my heart. These aren’t just recipes; they are stories, traditions, and memories woven into the fabric of Southern life.

How to make Fried Green Tomatoes

You’ll start by seasoning your green tomato slices. Next, set up a simple breading station with flour, egg, and a seasoned cornmeal mixture. Dip each tomato slice to coat it thoroughly.

Then, you’ll fry the coated tomatoes in hot oil until they turn a beautiful golden brown. Finally, drain them and serve them warm.

Serving suggestions

Serve these crispy fried green tomatoes as a satisfying appetizer or a fantastic side dish. They pair wonderfully with other Southern classics like grilled chicken, pulled pork, or even a simple supper of grits and eggs.

For an extra touch, offer a dollop of remoulade sauce or a sprinkle of fresh chopped chives. They’re amazing on their own too.

Storage tips

If you have any leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. To reheat, pop them in a 350°F oven or an air fryer until they’re warm and crispy again. You want to avoid the microwave if you want to keep them crispy.

This Crispy Southern Fried Green Tomatoes recipe truly embodies everything I cherish about Southern cooking. It’s simple, honest, and utterly delicious, reminding me of cherished moments and comforting traditions. I really hope you give this recipe a try and create some wonderful memories of your own.

Equipment

  • Cutting board
  • Knife
  • 3 shallow bowls
  • Whisk or fork
  • Large skillet or frying pan
  • Tongs or Spatula
  • Plate or baking sheet

Ingredients

  • 3 fresh green tomatoes sliced ¼ inch thick, at room temperature
  • 1 Salt and pepper to taste
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs beaten with 1 tablespoon water
  • ½ cup yellow cornmeal
  • ½ cup panko breadcrumbs
  • ¼ teaspoon paprika
  • A pinch of cayenne pepper optional
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  • Season each tomato slice generously with salt and pepper on both sides. Place the slices on a plate or cutting board as you finish seasoning them.
  • Grab three shallow bowls. Put the all-purpose flour in the first bowl. In the second bowl, whisk the eggs with one tablespoon of water. In the third bowl, combine the cornmeal, panko breadcrumbs, paprika, and cayenne pepper (if you’re using it).
  • Working with one tomato slice at a time, first dredge it in the flour, making sure to coat both sides. Then, dip it into the beaten egg mixture, letting any excess drip off. Finally, press the slice into the cornmeal and panko mixture, ensuring a good, even coating. Place the coated slices on a baking sheet.
  • Pour enough oil into a large frying pan to come about a half-inch up the sides. Heat the oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F to 375°F (175°C to 190°C). You can test the oil by dropping a tiny bit of the breading mixture into it; it should sizzle immediately.
  • Carefully place the coated tomato slices into the hot oil in batches. Don’t overcrowd the pan; give them space. Fry them for about 1 minute per side, or until they turn a beautiful golden brown and look crispy.
