A Southern food classic
Growing up, supper was the heart of our day, a time when we all came together around the table. My grandmother could take the simplest ingredients, like a head of cabbage and a few slices of bacon, and turn them into something magical.
This fried cabbage is more than just food; it is a connection to my roots and the comforting traditions of the South that I hold so dear. It represents the beauty of making a wonderful meal from humble beginnings.
Ingredients

How to make Fried Cabbage
First, you will cook some chopped bacon until it gets nice and crispy. Next, you will cook the onion in the bacon grease until it is soft. Then, you will add the cabbage and cook it down before pouring in some chicken broth and seasonings to finish it off.

Serving suggestions
I love to serve this fried cabbage alongside some classic Southern favorites. It pairs beautifully with cornbread, which is perfect for soaking up any extra juices from the skillet. You can also serve it with fried chicken or smoked sausage for a truly satisfying meal.

Storage tips
If you have any leftovers, they are easy to store. Just place the cooled cabbage in an airtight container and keep it in the refrigerator for up to three days. To reheat, simply warm it up in a skillet over medium heat until it is heated through.
Southern farewell
This recipe is a piece of my heart and my heritage, and I am so happy to share it with you all. I hope it brings as much warmth and comfort to your table as it does to mine. Give it a try and enjoy a true taste of the South.
Fried Cabbage
Equipment
- Cutting board
- Knife
- Large skillet or sauté pan
- Wooden Spoon or Spatula
- Measuring Cups and Spoons
- Serving spoon
Ingredients
- 1 small green cabbage about 2 pounds, cored and chopped
- 5 slices bacon coarsely chopped
- 1 small onion chopped
- ⅓ cup chicken broth
- Salt to taste
- Pepper to taste
- ¼ teaspoon smoked paprika
- Chopped parsley for garnish
Instructions
- In a large skillet, cook your chopped bacon over medium heat. You want it to get perfectly crispy. Once it is done, use a slotted spoon to move the bacon to a plate, but leave all that good rendered fat right in the skillet.
- Add the chopped onion to the same skillet with the bacon fat. Cook it for about five minutes, stirring it every now and then. The onion is ready when it looks soft and translucent.
- Now, stir in your chopped cabbage. Let it cook for about ten minutes, making sure to stir it from time to time. This will help it cook evenly and get tender.
- Pour in the chicken broth and season everything with salt, black pepper, and smoked paprika. Keep cooking and stirring occasionally. You can cook it until the cabbage is as tender as you like it.
- Finally, return the crispy bacon to the skillet. Give everything a good stir to combine all the flavors. Garnish with some fresh parsley and serve it up hot.
