Southern Mash is perfect for any occasion, whether it’s a weeknight dinner or a holiday feast. It’s a Southern favorite that never goes out of style and always brings a sense of nostalgia.

A Southern food classic

Southern food has a special way of connecting people and creating memories that last a lifetime. Growing up, there was never a holiday or a Sunday dinner without a big bowl of mashed potatoes on the table. My grandmother used to say that mashed potatoes were like a warm hug, and I couldn’t agree more.

Whether they were served with gravy or on their own, they always brought comfort. Southern Mash has that same spirit — creamy, flavorful and rich, it’s the kind of dish that invites you to sit down and enjoy a meal with those you care about most.

How to make Southern Mash

Making Southern Mash is simple and perfect for cooks of all skill levels. First, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and add the peeled and chopped potatoes. Cook them until they’re soft, usually about 20-25 minutes. While the potatoes are cooking, heat some oil in a pan over medium heat and sauté the minced garlic and chopped onions. Stir them until they turn golden and release their wonderful aroma, about 5-7 minutes.

Once the potatoes are tender, drain them and return them to the pot. Use a potato masher or a fork to mash the potatoes until they reach your desired smoothness. Then, add the sautéed garlic and onions along with the butter, half and half and cream cheese. Mix everything until it’s creamy and well blended. The rich flavors of the garlic and onions will elevate your mashed potatoes and make them irresistible.

To finish, transfer the Southern Mash to a serving dish. Sprinkle some fresh chopped parsley on top for a touch of color and added flavor. This dish is not just about taste; it’s about creating a warm and inviting experience at your table. Enjoy the creamy, dreamy goodness of Southern Mash, and watch it become a favorite at your gatherings!

Serving suggestions

Southern Mash pairs well with all kinds of Southern comfort foods. Serve it alongside fried chicken, barbecue ribs or a hearty beef stew. If you’re making it for a special occasion, add a side of collard greens or cornbread to complete the meal.

For a more indulgent twist, top the mash with gravy or even a bit of crumbled bacon. The possibilities are endless, and no matter how you serve it, Southern Mash always brings a touch of home to the table.

To reheat, simply pop it in the microwave or heat it on the stove with a little splash of milk or cream to keep it smooth and creamy. You can also freeze Southern Mash for up to a month — just let it thaw in the fridge before reheating.
