A Southern food classic

In the South, food is more than just nourishment—it’s an experience that brings people together. Growing up, baking was a family affair, with everyone pitching in to whip up sweet and savory dishes.

These cupcakes remind me of those moments spent laughing in the kitchen with loved ones. While cupcakes may not be traditional Southern fare, their creative flair and hearty buttercream nod to our region’s love for desserts that double as conversation starters.

How to make Abominable Snowman Cupcakes

Making these cupcakes is a simple process that starts with separating and coloring the buttercream. You’ll pipe blue frosting to form the snowman’s body, then decorate with candy eyes and a mouth.

White buttercream transforms into fur, giving the cupcakes their abominable snowman look. Finish with a red candy tongue for a fun touch. Each cupcake comes together in just a few steps, perfect for bakers of all skill levels.

Storage tips

To store leftovers, place the cupcakes in an airtight container. They’ll keep fresh at room temperature for up to two days or in the refrigerator for up to a week. When ready to enjoy again, let them sit at room temperature for 10–15 minutes to soften the buttercream.

These Abominable Snowman Cupcakes combine winter whimsy with the Southern tradition of sharing memorable desserts. • Spatula
  • Ice Cream Scooper
  • Piping Bag
  • Piping Tip 233

Ingredients

  • 6 Cupcakes
  • 12 Ounce of Buttercream
  • Blue Food Gel Color
  • Black Food Gel Color
  • Sprinkle Candy Eyeballs
  • Red Strip Candy

Instructions

  • Scoop 2 oz of buttercream into a small bowl. Add 2 drops of black food gel color and mix until fully combined. Transfer the black buttercream into a piping bag and tie the end.
  • Place 6 oz of buttercream in a separate bowl. Add 2 drops of blue food gel color and stir until the frosting is a uniform blue. Cover the bowl and set it aside.
  • Insert a piping tip into a new piping bag. Trim the bag’s tip to fit the piping tip. Fill the bag with the remaining white buttercream and secure the end.
  • Use an ice cream scoop to place a mound of blue buttercream on each cupcake. Add more if needed to create a rounded shape.
  • Attach candy eyeballs to the front of the blue frosting mound.
  • Use the black buttercream to pipe a small mouth just below the eyes, leaving space for the tongue.
  • Take the bag of white buttercream and pipe fur all over the cupcake. Cover the top, sides, and back, and fill in the space between the eyes and mouth to create a snowy effect.
  • Cut a red strip of candy into a half-circle shape and place it on the black buttercream to form a tongue.
  • Arrange the cupcakes on a flat surface, ready to serve and enjoy with your family or guests!

Notes

  • Feel free to use any cupcake flavor you enjoy as the base for this recipe.
  • Pro Tip: To ensure all the red candy tongue cutouts are uniform, use the first cutout as a template when cutting the remaining shapes.
  • Don’t worry if your black buttercream isn’t a deep black immediately. The color will darken as it rests in the piping bag and on the cupcakes.
  • Store finished cupcakes in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Before storing, remove the candy decorations, as their color may fade and the texture may change as the cupcakes come to room temperature.
  • Leftover buttercream can be kept in a freezer bag or airtight container in the freezer for up to 10 days.
