Something about that combination of sausage, cheese and just the right amount of creaminess takes me back to my childhood. The name Southern Sausage Cheese Balls says it all — simple, hearty and flavorful.

A Southern food classic

Southern food has always been a part of my life. From family reunions to Sunday suppers, these gatherings were filled with laughter, stories and, of course, delicious homemade dishes. Sausage cheese balls were a favorite on almost every occasion.

I remember helping my grandma in the kitchen, rolling these little balls of goodness by hand. Southern cuisine is truly comforting — it’s a collection of recipes that brings people together. That’s what I love most about it: Every dish tells a story, and every bite feels like home.

How to make Southern Sausage Cheese Balls

Preheat your oven to 390°F (200°C) and prepare your ingredients. I like to use homemade sausage, but store-bought works just as well. Sour cream replaces cream cheese in this recipe for a lighter texture and taste, which I think complements the dish perfectly. You can use any type of cheese you prefer, just make sure to shred it yourself to avoid extra starches in pre-shredded varieties.

For almond flour, ground almonds without skin work just as well, giving the sausage balls a lighter appearance. Since the sausage is already seasoned, there’s no need for extra spices.

Prepare the sausage by removing it from the casing if necessary. Place it in a large bowl, then add the almond flour, shredded cheese and sour cream. Mix everything until well combined.

Use a spoon or an ice cream scoop to shape the sausage balls evenly. Roll each portion into a ball with your hands. Once shaped, arrange the sausage balls on a cast iron skillet or a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Bake for about 25 minutes, or until they’re golden and cooked through. Serve immediately and enjoy with ranch dressing or your favorite dip.

Serving suggestions

These sausage cheese balls are perfect for any occasion — whether you’re hosting a brunch, throwing a party or just need a savory snack. Serve them with a creamy ranch dressing on the side or some tangy mustard for dipping. Pair them with a plate of deviled eggs or a side of biscuits to round out your Southern spread.

They also pair well as part of a big family breakfast, alongside scrambled eggs and grits. You can even sprinkle a little cayenne pepper or add some hot sauce on the side for a touch of spice.

Storage tips

If you have any leftovers (which is rare in my house!), store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. When you’re ready to enjoy them again, reheat them in the oven at a low temperature until they’re heated through.

This will help them stay crispy on the outside while remaining tender and cheesy on the inside. Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper to prevent sticking while reheating for the best result.

Southern farewell

Southern Sausage Cheese Balls are more than just a snack — they’re a little piece of Southern tradition. I love making these for family gatherings, and I know you’ll love sharing them too. They’re easy to make, flavorful and always a crowd-pleaser.

Give this recipe a try, and I guarantee it’ll become a staple in your kitchen just like it has in mine. There’s nothing quite like a Southern meal to bring people together, and this one is sure to do just that.
