Whether you’re making them for a family gathering or just because you’re in the mood for a little sweet Southern indulgence, this recipe captures the essence of Southern hospitality. Every bite brings back memories of gathering around the kitchen with loved ones, sharing stories and enjoying great food together.

A Southern food classic

Growing up in the South, food was always at the center of our family traditions. We’d gather every Sunday for a big meal, and there was always a homemade dessert to look forward to. My grandma’s brownies were a crowd favorite — rich, fudgy and flavorful.

Over the years, I’ve added my own twist to her classic recipe by incorporating a dash of Tabasco for that signature Southern heat. The blend of chocolate and spice reminds me of those warm, comforting meals, where every bite felt like a hug. These Southern Spiced Brownies are a nod to those cherished moments, bringing a bit of Southern flair to a timeless dessert.

How to make Southern Spiced Brownies

Making these Southern Spiced Brownies is a simple yet satisfying process that brings together the richness of chocolate and a bold blend of flavors. Start by melting the butter and dark chocolate together in a double boiler. Stir until the mixture is smooth and glossy, then set it aside to cool while you work on the rest of the ingredients.

Next, separate the eggs, dividing the yolks and whites into different bowls. Whisk the egg whites until light and airy, this will give your brownies a soft, tender texture. Slowly add the cooled chocolate mixture to the egg yolks, stirring gently to combine.

Once the yolks and chocolate are mixed, fold in the almond flour, vanilla and coffee for a rich, aromatic flavor. Don’t forget the secret ingredient — just a dash of Tabasco for that unexpected Southern kick. Finally, gently fold in the beaten egg whites, taking care not to deflate them, and transfer the batter to a prepared baking pan.

Bake your brownies until they’re firm and cracked on top slightly, but still soft in the center. The result is a batch of indulgent, spiced brownies with a Southern twist that will be the perfect addition to any meal or occasion.

Serving suggestions

These Southern Spiced Brownies are perfect on their own, but they shine well when served with a dollop of freshly whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream. You can also enjoy them with homemade sweet tea on the side for that true Southern experience.

If you’re feeling extra fancy, drizzle some caramel sauce on top before serving. Whether enjoyed warm or at room temperature, these brownies are an ideal dessert for any gathering or cozy evening at home.

Storage tips

If you have any leftovers (though they tend to disappear quickly!), store your brownies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days. For longer storage, you can refrigerate them for up to a week.

When you’re ready to enjoy them again, a quick zap in the microwave for 10-15 seconds will bring back their soft, fudgy texture. You can also freeze them for up to three months — just ensure to wrap them tightly to preserve their flavor and texture.

Southern farewell

These Southern Spiced Brownies have become a staple in my home, and I hope they find a place in yours, too. They bring together the best Southern flavors — rich chocolate, a hint of spice and a whole lot of comfort.

There’s just something about a warm, fudgy brownie that makes any day feel a little more special. So, gather your loved ones, share these brownies and make some sweet memories together. As we say in the South: Y’all enjoy!

Equipment

  • 1 Glass Bowl
  • 1 Instant Pot for double boiling
  • 1 Baking Tray
  • 1 Kitchen mixer
  • 1 Parchment Paper
  • 1 Adjustable baking cake mold

Ingredients

  • 250 Grams Sugar-Free Dark Chocolate
  • 200 Grams Butter
  • 150 Grams Almond Flour
  • 6 Eggs
  • 1 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • 1 Cup Decaf Coffee
  • 1 Tablespoon Tabasco
  • 1 Teaspoon Baking Powder
  • 3/4 Cup Sugar Substitute

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a baking tray by lining it with parchment paper or greasing it with butter.
  • In a double boiler, melt the dark chocolate and butter together. Stir occasionally until the mixture is smooth and fully combined. Set it aside to cool.
  • Separate the egg whites from the yolks. In one bowl, whisk the egg whites until they form stiff peaks, then set them aside. In another bowl, mix the egg yolks with your sugar substitute until the mixture is pale and well combined.
  • Slowly pour the cooled chocolate mixture into the egg yolk mixture, whisking continuously. Make sure the chocolate isn’t too hot to avoid cooking the eggs.
  • Add almond flour, baking powder and vanilla extract to the chocolate and egg mixture. Stir until fully combined. Then, slowly pour in the decaf coffee and stir to mix thoroughly.
  • Now for the fun part — add a tablespoon of Tabasco. Stir it into the batter, ensuring it’s evenly distributed for that spicy Southern touch.
  • Gently fold the beaten egg whites into the batter while not deflating them. This will help create a light, airy texture in the brownies.
  • Pour the brownie batter into your prepared baking tray. Spread it out evenly and place the tray in the oven. Bake for 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Allow the brownies to cool completely in the tray before cutting them into squares. Serve and enjoy!
